I find myself at a crossroads....

Wed Feb 25, 2009, 1:24 AM
the crossroads of a fanfic writer and an actual canon writer, the medium in question is comics. Let me start off by saying I don't usually care too much for fanfics, as many of them have a tendency to hit on several tropes which I find either boring, painful to watch, sometimes even downright disgusting(looking at you slash, wing, and Mary Sue, note that Tvtropes.org is my "go to" place for tropes and entertainment when it comes to tv, books, video games, and comics which aren't really all that entertaining. So god forbid you are unfamiliar with those tropes feel free to look them up.)

I have recently begun to come to the same conclusion about comic writers that Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw (of [link] fame) has come to about the masses. Now: to my point, recent comics have basically managed to corner almost every character in their collective universes into sever VERY predictable routes.

Some of this dross is massively out of character for the characters in question too, for example, Captain America would not immediately grab his shield and start building an army to fight the Superhuman Registration Act (here to referred to as SRA)after all Captain America is considered the living representative of the American Spirit, which includes being willing, if not happy, to sit at a table and negotiate to find a satisfactory resolution, for example the SRA could have been restricted to a program designed to recruit and train superhumans, but it wouldn't reveal their identities or any inherent weaknesses (like bullets or water if you are a low-grade fire/earth elemental), basically it trains every superhuman and then hires the ones who wish to fight, so that they can be assigned to a state where they will serve the people. Alas Captain America couldn't be written to do that as it's anti-climactic, but who cares? There could be better smarter stories written in it's stead.

The crossroads in particular is to seek out a job with a comic company as a quality control guy, or I can sit around and write scripts for better comics all day, until someone notices and picks me up. I really don't like the sound of that.

shit. i thought about being a comic book writer and that wouldn't make me happy at all. they need to get some new blood in or something, eh? or maybe just some quality writing?

Quality writing, although I'm fairly well convinced that the current lack of quality in comics is due to meddling from above, I know for a fact that Joe Quesada has made most of the crappy decisions for Marvel (note that Spiderman is no longer married to Mary Jane) and a character acting not being derailed is a major accomplishment in Marvel, unless that character's name is Deadpool, and that's only because the writers refuse to listen to any of the decisions that come from above, although they aren't entirely opposed to using the big crossover of the week to have Deadpool fight someone. I have no idea what is driving the current shittyness in DC though.

seems like you have a good grasp on the whole business. do you want to write/draw comics?

Nope, I'm too critical of myself to write or draw, well I could draw some day, but as it stands I lack talent. Were I to take a job related to the comic industry I would probably advise on stories, and I would probably make a good editor. Some of my friends use me in these aspects. I should start charging my acquaintances when they ask me for such help....
